How to sketch graffiti on a piece of paper.

Now read this …

Steps For Graffiti Painting
By Annette Labedzki

Before embarking on Graffiti Painting, one should be aware that there is a thin line between vandalism and graffiti. Only when one is safely on the right side of the law, should any kind of creative liberty be assumed through Graffiti Painting.

Painting Graffiti is an art of big scale. Its grandeur is enhanced by the size of the image. Stark and bold colors, along with the fonts, those themselves are an art form of their types. These are the hallmarks of Graffiti Painting.

Steps for Graffiti Painting.

• Subject. Choose the subject for your graffiti painting and starkly demarcate the shadow areas. Graffiti painting works only when one has clear chiaroscuro effect. Draw a small-scale image of the subject of your graffiti, taking care that there is not too much detailing. Subjects for beginners should appropriately be inspired from the artwork in comics. The fonts and rendering in comics make for a great beginners’ work.

• Coloring. Once you have outlined your graffiti sketch on a small scale, its time to fill in colors and imagine the entire work on a large scale. What looks awesome on small size, does not essentially translate into a large-scale graffiti work, neither is there a foolproof way to judge that. However, its this uncertainty only that makes the process of Painting Graffiti an evolutionary one.

• Outlining Work Area. Outline your Graffiti work area into a rectangle, using charcoal or white diluted paint. You can use a string to mark out a rough grid on the work area. Using charcoal, transfer the small-scale model onto the work surface.

• Background. Once you are done with outlining the work surface, spray a diluted neutral colored paint (White or Pale Cream) using aerosol can on the large areas of your Graffiti Painting, which are to be painted with dark colors. You may also use Paint Rollers to fill in symmetrical areas with colors. Make sure to spread a very thin layer of paint initially. The painted area should be left to dry for at least an hour.

• Coloring. Using aerosol cans filled with different colors, start with large areas of your Graffiti Painting, and move on slowly to small areas. Do not let the can’s nozzle linger on for more than three seconds at one place, as this would lead to the dripping of paint (of course, if that’s the effect you want then carry on the drip way).

• Fine Defining. Use fine brush and paint (preferably Emulsion) to bring out the fine lines and the effects of your graffiti painting.

• Preservation. If you want some longevity for your graffiti painting, spray it with a thin layer of varnish. You are done with your graffiti painting.

One very important fact of graffiti painting is its idea, its central motive. If you are not excited by an idea or by the colors, or by drawing the initial sketch, it’s suggested that you do not venture into this activity. Art without madness is no fun!

Annette Labedzki received her BFA at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. She has more than 25 years experience. She is the founder and developer of an online art gallery featuring original art from all over the world. It is a great site for art collectors to buy original art. Is is also a venue for artists to display and sell their art . Artists can join for free and their image upload is unlimited.
Graffiti Sketches, Tags, Pieces & Labels explained
By Neil Campbell

Graffiti sketches is where most newcomers begin but really you should start by asking yourself – graffiti – what does it really mean to you? Most people see it as something that emerged only in modern society, scribbled by urban youth on railway bridges. However, its use can be traced back to ancient civilisations, such as the ancient Egyptians whose hieroglyphics could be considered a form of what we know today as graffiti. One can even say that graffiti or writing, as it is more commonly known, dates back to the origins of mankind itself, when Neanderthal man’s sense of his environment was expressed through cave drawings.

More often than not graffiti has been characterised as vandalism due to its associations with the spray-painted drawings you often see plastered over buildings and walls in cities.

Graffiti art can be categorised in three common forms: Tags, Pieces and Labels. All of us have walked down a street and seen various walls covered with graffiti, but can we differentiate one item of graffiti from another? The most common and the easiest to recognise is a tag.

A tag is usually a simple one-coloured design (though it can be more complex). Put simply, it is a depiction of a writer or artist’s nickname or message, and its aim is to send a message to other writers.

A piece or masterpiece is a more complex form of graffiti art where a writer usually starts with some kind of pre-conceived plan or sketch. A piece tends to take graffiti art more in the direction of character art, which has a big fanbase. People will often be able to distinguish a writer’s work by their character designs alone. Artists like D*Face, Insa, Sickboy and Inkie can all be recognised by the characters or symbols in their pieces.

A label is when a writer’s tag or character design is printed on posters or stickers. Labels can be found in most cities around the world. This can be a great way for all kinds of artists to promote their art far and wide; usually tags are quite hard to see and they are only going to draw the attention of people interested in street art. You often see labels plastered on the back of street signs, lampposts, and anywhere with a smooth surface that can have something stuck to it.

Although graffiti art seems to have been part of the mainstream for ages, it was not until the 1970s that graffiti reinvented itself with a more modern term named writing, which first took root in the United States and later spread across the water to Europe.

The last decade has seen writing really take hold of the global art scene with celebrities emerging from the hub of graff artists around the world. It is only now that you hear about graffiti events like Secret Wars and people like American actress Angelina Jolie forking out £100,000 for an original piece by the notorious Bristol-born artist Banksy. Also, a new record was recently set when a piece went for a massive £280,000.

Graffiti art is the new cool, with hundreds of companies in the last few years jumping on the street art bandwagon. Graffiti is no longer just a shunned art form, yet it still manages to stay true to its origins by remaining accessible to the younger generation. Graffiti it seems is here to stay.

In this article, we’ll take graffiti art to mean wall art drawn with spray cans in public places. This is necessary to avoid confusion, for graffiti art can also be taken to mean an act of vandalism in a very general sense.

But when I was taking a closer look at the origins of graffiti art, it appears that this art form didn’t appear out of nowhere. In fact, it has risen out of a need for expression from people who didn’t have the money and the means to participate actively in both the art and the music scenes.

This urge or need to express became so strong that these people started creating their own art and music using what was available to them. And not much was available to them. So they turned to using their mouths (beat-boxing), scratching on tables (to simulate the scratching of records) and invented rap. Hip hop evolved out of rap music.

But the names and labels isn’t all that important. What’s more important is to understand the intent behind these art forms. What caused these people to invent hip hop music and graffiti art?

At the root of it is rebellion. There’s something that these artists are unhappy about, and they’re letting the world know about it. For instance, if you’re a fan of rap music, you’ll often hear some angry lyrics. It’s not within the scope of this article to discuss the source of anger. For now, it’s good enough to understand that rap and hip hop music stems usually stems from anger.

Similarly, for graffiti art, rebellion is made known by creating wall murals in public places. Doing this is illegal but yet, many have done this and it does appear that graffiti art is now out of control.

Artists worldwide have chosen this particular outlet to express themselves, to make sure that they’re heard. Graffiti art has been known to be a tool to get attention.

But what has this strong urge to grab attention (so much so that artists have to risk their neck by spraying on walls illegally) got to do with hip hop music?

Well, understanding the culture where hip hop music and graffiti music come from (and they come from the same source), one would guess that graffiti art could be the cheapest form of advertising (in fact, it’s free!). It’s the ultimate word-of-mouth marketing for the hip hop artists. And in essence, since both art forms represent the same dissent voices of the people of that culture, who’s to say or judge it’s wrong to create graffiti art?

Graffiti Writing – Learn How to Draw Graffiti

Graffiti writing has a long and much undulated history. Of late, Graffiti writing has taken the form of Art. Here are few basic tips to learn how to draw Graffiti…

Graffiti writing has seen many ups and downs. Since ancient times, the graffiti writing was famous and was used to mark the kingdoms of the kings. The graffiti writing at that included the emblem of the kingdom and also phases that defined the king. After words the graffiti writing has taken a bad shape as it was used by gangs and other local groups to use it as a means to scuffle and wage ambush.

After change of shift for graffiti writing from marking of kingdom to evil symbol, it has taken a form of art lately. It forms a way of expression with art content in it. It also symbolizes the state of the mind of the creator. The graffiti on the walls can make you smile and at the same time make you annoyed. All this depends upon the state of the mind of the creator.

Observation
The question "How to do graffiti" can be well answered by following the first basic step of any art form that is the observation. The observation of the surroundings can help you get a notion or an idea of the situation. Looking at the available piece of graffiti can also give you an idea of how to do graffiti. Once you have got the idea of how to do graffiti, you should now get to know how to draw graffiti. By trying to copy the existing graffiti you can have an idea of how to draw graffiti. When you copy graffiti you come to know about some of the basic ratios and proportions of the object. You also come to know how the perspective of object works.

Make your own impression with creativity
Once you have tried to copy a graffiti you should try to make your own variation in the graffiti this will let you understand in a better way to draw graffiti. Once you have acquired the basic skills of how to make graffiti you need to apply the skill. Try to make a graffiti that can set as your logo. Your creativity now comes into picture. You have to decide what you have to draw; the concept should be generated within your mind. You can also take graffiti tips from graffiti masters and schools.

Graffiti Tips
There are few graffiti tips that can be followed during your course of drawing graffiti. First among the graffiti tips is the use of paint cans. The graffiti is best made with the help of color spray cans that help you make graffiti on any texture and surface with minimum amount of effort and also within very short time. So get your self familiar with how to use the color spray can.

Another one graffiti tips is the order in which the graffiti making should go. First make a background for your graffiti to stand out. Make the background such that it gives a smooth finish to the graffiti. Make use of light colors such as white or Grey to make the background. Once the background is ready make use of small cap spray can to make the outline of the graffiti. The outline should be of light color and should merge well with the background. The outline is just for your convenience and not to stand out. Once the outline is over, go ahead with real painting and make the graffiti as per your thoughts.

Next is to make use of 3D effects; with the use of thin stroke of dull color you can make a three dimensional effect. To make the thin line, hold the can near the wall and make a fast stroke. This will limit the spreading of the paint and give you a sharp thin line. The colors of the graffiti are also very important and hence basic color wheel should be kept in mind while deciding the color combination.

To make your graffiti look tidy and neat, fill in all the space that is available. Do not leave gaps within your graffiti. Fill all the gaps with proper strokes of the color can. Also make sure that light shade does not overlap dark shade, it should always be the other way round.

The use of graffiti has reached to the art level and now is considered as a form of art, creativity and also offers you a method of expression. Graffiti offers a wide circulation of thoughts and leaves a better impact on the viewer than other means of expression.

The word Graffiti has been derived from the Italian word graffiato which means scratched or itched. Although there have been popular Graffiti artists who have enjoyed tremendous popularity, Graffiti is often synonymous with vandalism. Graffiti might have started out with simple scratch marks made on walls but evolved with time to include colorful additions with spray paints and markers. Frowned upon by many, Graffiti still continues to be an effective medium and a unique art form that can be used for depicting social or political messages with a dash of confidence, bold colors and witty messages. However, running a person’s personal property or valuable public property by depicting wrong things at the wrong place can be considered as vandalism and is punishable by law in most of the countries.

History of Graffiti Street Art

The word ‘graffiti‘ was first used to refer to the inscriptions found on the walls of ancient sepulchers. The earliest instances of vandalistic graffiti are found in an ancient Greek city, which depicted a handprint, a footprint and a number, which was supposed to be an advertisement for a brothel. During the Renaissance, artists such as Michelangelo Pinturicchio, Raphael, Filippino Lippi or Ghirlandaio descended into the ruins of Nero’s Domus Aurea, they carved or painted their names, which is supposed to be similar to the graffiti art, however not vandalistic in nature. The Signature Rock along the Oregon Trail is an example of Graffiti in America. In1790, there were instances of French soldiers carving their names on monuments. There also exists Chinese graffiti on the Great Wall of China. By mid-1986 the Metro Transit Authority was putting in strong efforts t abolish graffiti. The Clean Train Movement in New York during 989 aimed at removing all of the subway cars with graffiti out of the transit system.

Common Styles of Graffiti Street Art

While discussing about the basic styles or formats in Graffiti Street Art, we have to start the discussion with tagging. A tag implies to a basic form of graffiti, which only includes the artist’s name, which is considered as the writer’s personalized signature. The tags can include the artists name or the initials. A throw-up is another popular form, which is painted quickly using two or three colors. The throw ups are usually poor on the aesthetic scale since they are achieved with speed. In Graffiti street art terminology, a ‘piece’ is an elaborate representation of the artist’s name, which often makes use of stylized lettering and more colors.

There is a form called the blockbuster, which is a large piece with two contrasting colors. The whole idea behind enlarging the piece is to occupy a large space and prevent others from using it. The ‘wildstyle’ is a form of graffiti, which involves interlocking letters, arrows, and connecting points, which are often difficult to comprehend for everyone. Another style is a roller is which is similar to the blockbuster. While there have been instances of using stickers, adherents of graffiti culture have frowned upon this practice labeling it as laziness and cheating.

Graffiti is an art form for many, a type of attacking tool for some but more importantly it a means of effective communication. Graffiti is used to express social as well as political messages through the scribbles and colors. For some Graffiti is an art form that requires immense creativity and passion. Whereas for the battling gangs it is just a part of their war!

In this post we’re discussing the art of graffiti and how to actually learn to draw it easily. I’ve found a great video for you to watch and an excellent article for you to read on the subject.

So here’s the article on how to draw graffiti …

The Art of Drawing Graffiti

Graffiti as an art form began making its appearance in the 1960s… Read more about it here.

The meaning of the term ‘graffiti’ simply is – drawings or words scribbled or scratched on a wall. It has been derived from the Greek word ‘graphein’, which means ‘to write’, while the term ‘graffiti’ itself is the plural form of ‘graffito’, an Italian word.

The art of drawing graffiti began making its way on public walls in the latter part of the 1960s, which the famous folk singer duo, Simon and Garfunkel expressed in their song of the ’60s, ‘Sounds of Silence’: "The words of the prophets were written on the subway walls and the tenement halls…"

However, graffiti as a form of unsolicited messages has existed forever, with the ancient cave paintings, dating back 40,000 years to the Upper Paleolithic era coming to mind. And of course, right from those times, drawing has always been a means of human being’s deep need and desire to communicate.

A Peek into the History of the Art of Drawing Graffiti Letters

Although the art of drawing graffiti letters began in the 60s, the period between 1971-1974 is generally regarded as the era when most of the pioneering work in graffiti was done, since this was the time when this form of art began spreading and getting publicity. For some of the youth of that time, it was a means through which they could vent their angst at a world they found oppressive, and as a way of rebelling against a society they thought was unjust and corrupt.

However, for others, these graffiti characters were simply a pleasurable means of expressing their creativity, just as a unique art form. Like conventional artists, they used walls as a canvas onto which they poured their souls, their dreams, their hopes, and their fears with a spray-can of bright colors. It was during 1975 to 1977 that the art of drawing graffiti reached its peak, with standards of drawing graffiti letters being established.

However, as the 70s slipped into the 80s, being a graffiti artist became more challenging, as the authorities began clamping down harder on them, since it was considered vandalism, because much of the graffiti was made by gangsters, who were young and usually poor. This was known as the ‘die hard’ era, as graffiti culture withdrew under cover.

Today’s graffiti culture is referred to as the ‘clean train era’, as many graffiti artists are taking their art from the subway walls and the insides of train cars into studios and galleries, with the establishment increasingly viewing it as a genuine art form.

And hence, these days some cities have provided particular areas to graffiti artists where they are allowed to display their art. The trouble with this is that a previous work has to be painted over in order to use the space. Therefore, good graffiti artists usually do not use such spaces.

One of the most important features of drawing graffiti is that each piece of art has the artist’s name. Spray paint is the medium used, and there are particular techniques that have been established for drawing graffiti letters.

What are the Various Styles of Drawing Graffiti?

Technically, graffiti is any kind of art that is made on a building or wall. When graffiti drawings first started appearing, which was in New York City, the tools used to create them were usually spray paint or wide tipped markers, which were used basically to get up ‘tags’, or the graffiti writer’s name, and not any art as such. This was done to make themselves known all over the city. The bigger and the more colorful they could make their tag, the more attention they got. This gave rise to graffiti ‘wars’ springing up, with each artist trying to outdo the other in making their tag bolder and bigger. However, once these graffiti artists figured that anybody could spray on huge letters, style began making its appearance.

Graffiti Styles:

To people who are unfamiliar with the art, all graffiti seems the same, however, there are several distinctive graffiti styles. Most of these styles are about using particular fonts to create graffiti letters or graffiti characters.

Tagging: This graffiti style is used mainly for displaying penmanship, and is considered as lacking in artistic form.

Blockbuster: As the name of this style implies, large sized block letters are used.

Wildstyle: Interweaving graffiti letters with designs.

Throw-Ups: Graffiti drawing that is done very quickly using few colors.

Bubble Letters: Large graffiti letters written in a rounded style.

Each of these graffiti styles can be used to create various types of graffiti:

Hip-Hop Graffiti: Reflecting African-American culture, this is considered to be the most traditional type of graffiti.

Challenge Graffiti: The intention of this type of graffiti is just to express that somebody ‘was here.’

Poster Graffiti: Graffiti made on posters that have people’s pictures on them.

Aircraft Graffiti: Drawing tags on airplanes, usually on the dirt on it.

Tree Graffiti: As is apparent from its name, graffiti that is painted or carved on trees.

Invisible Graffiti: Purely symbolic graffiti, like logos made on computer microchips, which although are there, can’t be seen by anybody.

Different media is used to create each of these types of graffiti. Although graffiti is being legitimized and some of it may be getting into more established forms of displaying art, such as studios and art galleries, purists of this art form are of the opinion that it is only the ones that show up on train cars and public walls that are true graffiti.
